We want our students to be confident math thinkers and problem solvers. We want them to work with numbers fluently and flexibly. This session will focus on strengthening numeracy skills in a Thinking Classroom. Following Peter Liljedah's framework, we will explore number talks, strategies for addition and subtraction, and tools to support students wherever they are in their math learning. We will also explore some Big Beautiful Problems and picture books to inspire the love and joy of numeracy!

How do I cover all of the ELAL curriculum in my week, month, and year?

Designing a structure, routine, and schedule for your ELAL block will provide you with the framework for covering the ELAL curriculum. Join Angela DesBarres in examining how this can be done and how much easier planning becomes. We will look at some exemplar schedules from around the province, and you will have time to tweak your current schedule or completely build a new one.

There is a new Social Studies Curriculum on the horizon! Where do I start with it?
Join Angela DesBarres in planning to ensure that the Learning Outcome is covered by the end of the Year. We will look at keys to planning and templates that will help you know where you are going in covering the Social Studies Curriculum.

However, many students face challenges in achieving fluency with these foundational skills, which can hinder their overall academic progress. Participants will engage in an informative session that addresses this critical issue with effective strategies and practical tools for a daily class-wide fact fluency practice. Attendees will explore an evidence-informed approach that has shown remarkable results within local divisions. Whether you are a classroom teacher or administrator seeking a straightforward yet effective solution, this session will provide valuable insights and actionable steps to ensure your students gain the confidence and skills necessary for future success in mathematics. Join us in learning this simple yet powerful daily practice to support students who have not yet mastered basic math facts, ensuring every learner can succeed.

3. Provide recent and remarkable data from local divisions

In collaboration with three school divisions in Alberta and funded by the Research Partnerships Program of Alberta Education, Number Talks were implemented over four months in Grades 4 - 8. Our goal was to determine if the implementation of Number Talks would serve to increase the competence and confidence of students in their numeracy skills. We had approximately 30 teachers and 300 students participate in the research project. This session will present the research findings and and the implications for teacher practice.
