Here are a few key points to get you started:

  1. Keeping informed about MPTC 2025- The most up to date information is posted on our website and in our Facebook Group. Keep an eye on our posts and emails for upcoming social events, speakers, and contests. These opportunities will provide valuable insights, resources, and networking possibilities.
    Read the February Newsletter.

  2. Build your schedule - Be sure to read the descriptions!: Please note that adding a session to your schedule DOES NOT guarantee you a seat in the room. We allow attendees to select multiple sessions per time slot when creating their schedule to allow for maximum flexibility on the day of Convention. All sessions are first come, first served, unless otherwise stated in the session description. Some sessions are double sessions and some require pre-registration and may have a fee to cover costs of materials. Please read and follow the instructions in the descriptions. We are excited to include several off-site sessions this year, so be sure to check the location as well.

3. New schedule - There are four time slots when sessions are held on each day. Sessions are 70 minutes long and there is 20 minutes between sessions to allow time to get to the other venue(s) if necessary.
Session 1: 9am-10:10am
Session 2: 10:30am-11:40am
Lunch 11:40am-12:40pm
Session 3: 12:40pm-1:50pm

The Poet's Toolbox - thinking like a poet
Friday March 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:10am MST
English teachers and students are unified on at least one thing - they all hate poetry! However, what if they didn't? This session will offer several practical lessons to help make poetry (both writing and analysis), if not enjoyable, at least less painful. Once students (and teachers) see how they are already living in a world surrounded by poetry, A critical framework (formalism, reader-response criticism, deconstruction) will also be included if there is interest. The material will include:
- a recursive approach to analyzing poems
- imagery
- personification
- metaphor
- the vatic voice
- apostrophe
- presentation

Session Objectives:
1. I hope to pass on my enthusiasm for poetry.
2. Monday lessons: writing an elegy; collaborative imagery; creating a poetry portfolio; playing the personification game;

Can a Video Clip Under Four Minutes be Stretched Over a Week?
Friday March 7, 2025 10:30am - 11:40am MST
We will examine how to use a specific video clip (length: 3:26) from Season 1 of Mad Men as the basis for an entire week (or more) of lessons. Students can practice using inferences, supporting evidence, camera angles, shots, tone, mood, color, non-diegetic music, subtext, research, personal connections, parental participation, speaking skills, and slideshows. This session will also provide teachers with possible entry points into discussions about historical context, advertising, consumerism, memory, identity, family, work, race, technology, and gender.

This is probably the lesson more of my students remember than any other - though perhaps not for the right reasons. To be fair, the rest of my stuff is pretty forgettable. . .

Session Objectives:
1. Monday lessons: visual analysis of the video clip, starting with the slides from the video.
