The Power of Representation: Unpacking Implicit Biases and its Implications in Education
Friday March 7, 2025 10:30am - 11:40am MST
The importance of representation in today s diverse classrooms cannot be overstated. This presentation will delve into the critical role representation plays in shaping student identities and perceptions. We will explore how diverse role models influence student engagement, motivation, and academic success, particularly for underrepresented groups.
Furthermore, we will uncover the concept of implicit biases subconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions. As teachers and leaders, recognizing our hidden biases is essential for fostering an inclusive educational environment. Unpacking implicit bias is particularly important for school leaders because it directly impacts policies, practices, and the overall school culture. Leaders set the tone for their institutions and have the power to influence how diversity is valued and integrated into the curriculum and staff development.

Session Objectives:
1. Participants will engage in reflective exercises aimed at revealing their implicit biases and understanding their implications on teaching and leadership styles.
2. Through collaborative discussions, we will share strategies to create a more equitable and representative educational framework that champions diversity and fosters a culture of belonging.

Sexual Health Stats and Trends: Using the data to inform your teaching
Friday March 7, 2025 2:10pm - 3:20pm MST
Are you a data nerd and teaching sexual health this year? Have you wondered: At what age do youth start having sex? What percentage of youth are using birth control? What is the prevalence of youth dating violence? In this session, we use Canadian data relevant to sexual health to explore how statistics can inform your teaching. Stats matter because they provide a snapshot of students experiences but only tell part of the story. We also ask what is missing from the data and how we can use this whole picture to reduce shame and stigma and create safe and inclusive classrooms for all students.

Session Objectives:
1. Learners will relate statistics regarding sexuality among Alberta teens to the need for comprehensive sexual health education
2. Learners will discuss aspects of sexual health that are not captured by quantitative data
3. Learners will consider how their teaching practice in sexual health education can contribute to reducing shame and stigma and promote healthy decision making
